Background of BamCCUL
Bambili Cooperative Credit Union Limited, abbreviated as BamCCUL, is dynamic people-owned Microfinance Institution that provides reasonably priced financial products and/or services to its members.
It is a member-owned institution that prioritizes members’ needs over profit maximization and fosters a sense of community. BamCCUL aims to alleviate poverty by promoting regular savings, wise borrowing, and prompt repayments among members.
Rev. Father Janson Anthony initiated the concept of cooperatives in the Northwest Region of Cameroon, which was later adopted by FON AWEMO II of Babmili in 1967 and the pioneering members consist of eight peasant indigenes, namely, Manjong Dominic, Nsah Alex Minang, Ashanga Cyprain, Abongeh Anthony, Joseph Awanko, Joseph Mofor, Tangeh Andreas, and Abonbang Stevephen.
BamCCUL Registration
The credit union was officially registered on August 8, 1968, and was affiliated with Cameroon Cooperative Credit Union Limited (CAMCCUL). The office was originally located at a local primary school, and it was later moved to a larger space at 3 Corners Bambili due to membership growth.
Currently, BamCCUL operates from a three-story building at 3 Corners Bambili and has expanded its reach with ten branches nationwide, including locations in Yaoundé, Douala, Bamenda, Foumban, Kumba, and Kye-ossi, among others. Importantly, BamCCUL serves not only Bambili indigenes but also members from diverse backgrounds.
BamCCUL later disaffiliated from CAMCCUL and re-affiliated to Renaissance Cooperative Credit Unions in Cameroon (RECCU-CAM) on August 14, 2013 following disagreements and new regulations requiring category 1 microfinance institutions to belong to an umbrella organization. BamCCUL is fully accredited and registered under the Ministry of Finance (MINFI) and the Central African Banking Commission (COBAC).
